I have been getting very annoying calls from this number about 5 times per day over the last 10 days on my cel. phone. The first few times that I actually answered, there was nobody/nothing on the other end of the line. In addition, these calls would also leave about a 5 second voicemail on my phone with dead air. VERY ANNOYING. So… after googling this number I discovered that it was originating from register.com. I called their support and the rep. that I got initially denied that it was originating from them. However, after he put me on hold and investigated it, he returned to say that yes… it is a register.com automated call for the purpose of warning customers that they have a domain name that is about to expire. You would think that A) there would be a voice or a recorded message on the other end of the line to convey this information and B) They would notify their customers that they were starting to implement a phone reminder (I have been a register.com customer since 2000 and have never experienced these calls until June of 2009 (nor was I forewarned about them). AND this is the biggy- GIVE THE CUSTOMER THE OPPORTUNITY TO OPT OUT!!!
I asked the support rep. at register.com to remove my number from their call list (which he claimed to have done). If this doesn’t stop the calls next I will approach AT&T about blocking this specific number.
This is terrible business on the part of register.com. I had already been considering moving my one domain name that I have registered at register.com over to Nominated Solutions (nomsol.com) due to the difference in price (the domain names that I have registered at nomsol.com cost me $14/yr each while I pay $35/yr for the one at register.com!). I will definitely be running, not walking away from register.com now to the more affordable and less intrusive nomsol.com!
… well… as I was typing this post I just received another lovely invasion of privacy from register.com. AT&T here I come.
