On Monday, April 13th, 2009, we received a phone call from Graeme’s daycare stating that he had fallen on the playground and hurt his arm. Vic rushed to pick him up and we wound up in the Baptist Emergency Room where he was seen around 8pm. X-rays showed that Graeme had a near clean break just above his left elbow and it was decided that a pediatric orthopedic surgeon would be called in immediately. Graeme underwent surgery around 10:30pm that evening and spent the night in the hospital. Dr. Robbins had to anesthetize him, straighten his arm and then re-assemble it using 3 pins. Luckily he was able to leave the pins protruding from the skin so they could be removed without additional surgery in about 3 or 4 weeks time. Dr. Robbins (with whom we were extremely pleased) claims that Graeme will be back to 100% in about 6 weeks.
Vic and I took turns staying home with him for the remainder of the week. Graeme got a proper cast on his arm today, Friday, April 17th, and hopefully he’ll be able to return to daycare on the upcoming Monday. Needless to say… it has been a rough week for us. On Monday, when the accident occurred, I was already home from work sick with fever and a nasty sinus infection and Vic has been exhibiting similar symptoms as well. We are very relieved that Graeme is now feeling a bit better and that he’ll make a full recovery!
Graeme described the incident to us as follows… “I jumped off the steps and Kinley jumped on top of me. She is not my best friend!”
Just to update… Graeme got his cast off on Friday, May 8th and is doing well. He is back at school now and has to wear a sling for one additional week. After that, Dr. Robbins says that he’ll be 100%!
Below are some photos and video from the ordeal including a couple of x-ray views of Graeme’s hardware!
