The Artistry Of Billy Higgins
Written on March 20, 2009 at 3:43 pm, by Denny
Billy is one of my favorite jazz drummers, if not my very fave. He was pretty much the house drummer for the Blue Note label in the early to mid 1960′s… playing on sessions led by the likes of Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean and many others.
I had forgotten about him being featured on the Jazz From Lincoln Center radio program until I stumbled across this disc in my collection recently. I remember capturing it from the National Public Radio website to my mini-disc recorder and then moving it back onto my computer in about 2001. It’s a brilliant documentary piece on Mr. Higgins, narrated by Ed Bradley, that gives the listener a glimpse into his immense talent. Along with Billy’s fantastic soloing and accompaniment of many top names in jazz (Abbey Lincoln, Ron Carter, Cedar Walton, George Coleman and Wessell Anderson) it also contains a recording of Billy playing guitar and singing in Portuguese! Here’s a link to the transcript as well.
